In 1899, Giovanni Agnelli and other investors founded the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT). Giovanni Agnelli was born in 1866, attended the military school at Modena, and then quit the army in 1892. Realizing the high level of skilled workers in Turin and realizing that the automotive industry could provide transportation and jobs for normal people , Agnelli led the company until his dead in 1945.

Agnelli's leadership had such an impact that by 1910, Fiat was the largest firm in Italy. Even today, Fiat is the largest company  in Italy and also the largest vehicle manufacturer in Italy, with a wide variety of cars, including the small Fiat city cars, to sports cars made by Ferrari, and Ducato trucks and vans. Fiat remains a very profitable company, with revenues 59.559 billion Euros and a profit of 1.333 billion Euros in 2011.
